You said I was a magic thing You used to answer the phone and sing All we ever wanted was a home You know that you unraveled me And you did so intentionally Why did you tell me that you were in love In the morning light I touch your face I wonder who I have replaced I’m a substitute at best but I’m still here You You never came to my town Still you like to keep me around You I’ll disappoint you again You Would you still be my friend You’re aloof, you like to stay that way Don’t smile, don’t give it away But I have seen you softer once or twice I am vigilent, I make the plans And you will never understand I didn’t choose to be this way, I was made

I used to be irreverent Take what’s mine Always the first one The first in line But now I take a little more time I go to parties Take my seat Smile on purpose Watch my drink Try real hard Not to think I have arrived in a place where no one knows my name I have arrived in a place I’ve always wanted The courage to be an absolute nobody I used to never sleep late Always awake Always moving Always great But now I don’t need to be great I like the view from down low Don’t find me It’s dark in this place But I can see Everyone moving above me
3.
I moved to this town for you Now I sleep all alone On the mattress that I tied to the top of my car The day I moved from Tennessee I went to that house today To take the rest of my stuff Those hydrangeas were finally blooming I only got to see them once And I don’t know why But that was the thing that made me cry 20 keys on my keyring And none of them lead to a home They all open heavy doors To places where I’m alone And I don't know why But that was the thing that made me cry I put on a dress today I had no place to be In the bathroom light I wondered Who would want to look at me And I don't know why But that was the thing that made me cry You tell me you don’t want to lose me But you can’t tell me why you choose me You told me you could not lose me So why did you do what you did to me? Listen now, I cannot know you So I have nothing left to show you

Brand New 03:54
In 31 years I’ve learned some things about livin And most of these things I’ve learned from other women I've learned it's hard to say no when you're scared And when you do they might not want you there I’ve learned other people cry, more than you think they do And the pictures they share isn’t all that’s there just like you I’ve learned our mothers are no strangers to pain And they smile for us so they don’t have to explain Don’t you see I’m brand new I’ve learned to tell myself that I’m doing something good And if I could do any better, then I probably would I don’t know the names of the birds or the stars But I’ll learn em tomorrow when life feels a little less hard I’ve learned to take up space inside of a room And to withhold apologies that never needed you I’ve learned to smile bearing all my teeth And I’ve found there’s light inside the darkest parts of me
